Processed Engineered Fuel (PEF)

Working closely with Adelaide Brighton Cement Limited, ResourceCo developed Processed Engineered Fuel (PEF) as a partial replacement for fossil fuels in the Adelaide Brighton cement kiln. The process harnessed the energy contained in combustible material that would have traditionally gone to landfill and resulted in the commissioning of Australia's first PEF manufacturing plant in 2006 at Wingfield, South Australia. Following the successful development of this alternative fuel, SITA Australia partnered with ResourceCo to establish SITA-ResourceCo Alternative Fuels in 2007.

SITA-ResourceCo Alternative Fuels

Built at a total cost of over $20 million, the automated SITA-ResourceCo plant sorts, sizes and extracts combustible material from commercial waste streams in order to manufacture PEF. The facility has the capability to manufacture up to 350,000 tonnes of raw material per annum into approximately 100,000 to 150,000 tonnes of Process Engineered Fuel and is the first and only one of its kind in Australia.

Process Engineered Fuel has significant calorific value and can be used as a fuel substitute for coal and gas in high-combustion facilities and its use will benefit end-users in two ways:

  • The energy replacement value from utilising Process Engineered Fuel instead of traditional fossil fuels
  • The carbon and renewable energy benefits:
    • Through reduced fossil fuel use.
    • The reduction in landfill emissions.
    • Renewable energy certificates obtained.

It is the Company's intention to work with various end user partners to ascertain and realise the full value of these benefits, for the mutual benefit of both parties.

SITA-ResourceCo is now in the process of establishing additional Process Engineered Fuel manufacturing facilities throughout Australia, based on the same platform as the existing Wingfield premises.
